Downham Market is a village and civil parish in Norfolk , England . It is on the edge of the Fens , on the River Great Ouse , about 20 km south of King's Lynn , 60 km west of Norwich, and about the same distance north of Cambridge .

The Civil parish covers an area of ​​5.2 km² and in 2001 had a population of 6,730, divided into 3,258 households. The village falls in the District of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk . It is part of South West Norfolk .

The village was an agricultural center, having previously been a producer for the Fens' economy. The village also has a bridge over the Ouse. In the Middle Ages it was known for selling butter and it also had a horse market.

One of the town's special attractions is the medieval parish church named after Edmund the Martyr and a Victorian clock tower built in 1878. The village is also known for the fact that Charles I hid there after the battle of Naseby . The market square is currently undergoing major changes by relocating the market to the town hall car park. The city sign depicts the crown and arrows of Charles I. It also depicts horses to emphasize the importance of the horse markets of that time.
