The Dr. Johanna Decker Schools ( DJDS for short ) are a private, state-recognized grammar school and a secondary school in Amberg ( Bavaria ). The school was founded in 1839 by the poor school sisters of Our Lady in the former convent of St. Augustine the Salesian Sisters . It is the first high school for girls in the Upper Palatinate.

The two schools are still all girls' schools today and are attended by around 735 students (as of 2018). The schools work together under a common school management, which facilitates the transition between schools for the pupils.

The school today bears the name of its former student Johanna Decker (1918–1977), who worked as a missionary doctor in Rhodesia , now Zimbabwe , and was murdered there.

On January 1st, 2005, the School Foundation of the Diocese of Regensburg took over the sponsorship of the schools. A monthly school fee is charged.

Foundation of the school

Mother Maria Theresa von Jesu Gerhardinger (1797–1879) founded the Congregation for Poor School Sisters in 1833. The order grew rapidly within ten years and several branches were founded. In 1843 the mother house of the congregation was established in the Angerkloster in Munich . From there the order spread worldwide. Mother Maria Theresa opened the first female teachers' seminar in Bavaria to train her own teachers. In 1985 Maria Theresia Gerhardinger was beatified . In 1998 her bust was added to the Walhalla .

In 1839, six years after the order was founded, Mother Maria Theresa opened a secondary school for girls in Amberg. She had to fight against the resistance of many citizens. The 24-year-old M. Margarita von Cortona Wiedemann was entrusted with the management. The school quickly gained an excellent reputation.

Subjects and special activities

The grammar school leads to the Abitur within eight years (→  shortened course - G8 ).

At the grammar school, the pupils can choose between a linguistic, an economic and social science and a scientific and technological focus. At the Realschule there is an economics, a language and a home economics branch.

Since 1994 there has been a partnership with the Lycée Technique Privé Sainte Anne in Ettelbruck ( Luxembourg ), a Catholic girls' school; since 2014 there has been a partnership with Northampton High School, a British private girls 'school in the Girls' Day School Trust.
