Drakan: The Ancients' Gates is an action adventure game from Surreal Software and the sequel to Drakan: Order of the Flame . Unlike its predecessor, it was developed exclusively for PlayStation 2 and published by Sony, the parent company of the previous publisher Psygnosis , in January 2002 in the USA, and finally also in Germany in July 2002.
action
The Ancients' Gates follows on from the events of the predecessor Order of the Flame . Rynn and Arokh return to their utterly devastated home village in the hope of meeting survivors. But the area is completely depopulated. For this Arokh hears a distant call from the north. Lady Myschala, the ruler of Surdana, calls for help as the city is being attacked by the so-called Desert Lords and their monster hordes. The rescue should bring a renewed alliance with the dragons. For this, four portals - the eponymous Ancients' Gates - have to be opened to the world of the dragon mother Mala-Shae, which is only possible with the help of Arokh. Rynn goes in search of the portals to revive the Order of the Flame.
Gameplay
The game principle of Order of the Flame was retained and is again divided into ground and flight sections. The player controls Rynn from a third-person perspective through the three-dimensional game world. One focus is the action-oriented fighting in real time. Rynn can wield melee weapons (swords), use bows for ranged combat and magic. If she sits on Arokh's back, the player controls the dragon's flight. Arokh can defend himself against other flying creatures with fireballs. In addition to the fights, there are smaller puzzles and skill tasks to be solved. There are tasks relevant to progressing the plot as well as side missions. Rynn collects experience points over the course of the game, which she can use to unlock new skills. With the help of captured coins, she can also buy better equipment or discover it during the missions.
development
Sony announced the development of the game for the PlayStation 2 in April 2000. In January 2002 the game was delivered to the American trade.
reception
|
The game received positive reviews ( Metacritic : 78%).
“Anyone who gets involved in Drakan: The Ancients' Gates needs a lot of time in their luggage. Although the story can only grab you at the beginning and the puzzles are little more than placeholders, the numerous quests, the simple - but still demanding - combat system and above all the dogfights and RPG elements can largely hide this shortcoming. [...] And last but not least, with Rynn you finally have an adequate female character in the genre, who kicks her male opponents like Mike LeRoi in the buttocks. "
“Drakan: The Ancients' Gates did the long development time well. The huge levels look like one piece and look great. The controls of the heroes are almost perfect and give the player a high degree of control over Rynn and Arokh. The textures could be more detailed in the outer levels, but this in no way diminishes the optical brilliance of the title. "
