Drama is the fourth studio album by the German rapper Shindy . It was released on July 12, 2019 on his Friends with Money label , and was distributed by Sony Music .

background

Shindy, OZ and Nico Chiara in the studio

The album was preceded by the separation from Bushido's label Ersguterjunge , which is based on a dispute between Bushido and clan chief Arafat Abou-Chaker . This dispute was fought out in the media and in the course of it all contracts between Ersguterjunge and his artists were the subject of various speculations. In the end, Shindy did not choose either side, but founded his own label with his business partner Alexander Klöpfer called Friends with Money.

The album was produced by Shindy himself, the Swiss producer OZ and Nico Chiara in Shindy's studio in Bietigheim-Bissingen . The first single to be released was DODI on January 11, 2019 , which went straight to number 1 in the German, Austrian and Swiss single charts. It was Shindy's first musical sign of life since 2016 when the album Dreams was released. Work on the album continued, the album was initially due to be released in May 2019, but was ultimately only released on July 12, 2019.

Cover design

The album cover shows a scene from the DODI music video. Shindy is shown in a white fur coat and a champagne bottle. A violet-blue filter was also covered.

Guest Posts

Guest posting is not available on the currently available version of Drama . However, the singer Shirin David could be heard on an old version of Affalterbach . However, this part was revised due to a lack of approval from Shirin David.

Music genre

The album is largely shaped by the production of Nico Chiara and Oz. Musically, it is a German interpretation of the US rap of the 1990s, as it is typical for Shindy. Accompany the album three Interludes in radio drama style that Shindys satirize arrogance. The lyrical content is also a typical Shindy album, which is mainly held in the show-off style and in which Shindy speaks arrogantly about moving topics, especially luxury items, and devalues other rappers. However, homages to rappers such as Massive Töne and Torch and various US rappers are also incorporated, which are not commonplace in German rap. Shindy doesn't make the beef with Bushido and Arafat the main theme. He does not mention the two by name, but alludes to the situation in a few verses.

reception

The album received very mixed reviews. At Laut.de the album received three out of five possible stars. The reviewer Robin Schmidt writes:

“Even if ten straight tracks would have been enough, ' Drama ' is quite a success. 'Affalterbach' and 'Nautilus' alone are pure hip hop. The rapper himself predicted it in ' Dodi ': 'The rumor mill is simmering again, Mamma Mia! / Because I'll bring Michi back like Fanta 4. ' Welcome back, Mister Arrogance! "

The online magazine MZEE sees the album from a mixed perspective and sums it up:

“'Drama' doesn't really deliver what the title promises. As with previous releases, Shindy delivers a deliberately superficial record that scores above all with its sound. This is entertaining for a long time, but subjects the songs to a certain arbitrariness. Because Shindy's big-headed status symbol banter is ultimately quickly told. "

The album was reviewed as "Battle of the Ear" in Juice magazine . While Oliver Marquart gave the album four and a half of six possible crowns, Killian Peters gave the album two crowns rather negatively. Oliver Marquart wrote:

““ Drama ”doesn't live from the fact that Shindy is a guy with rough edges. He is now implementing his vision as a rapper and (co-) producer extremely conclusively and tastefully. This includes the many small allusions and mini-homages to German rap ( Torch , Massive Töne ) such as US rap ( 50 Cent , Fabolous , Dr. Dre ). Would the three interludes have been dispensed with? For sure. Is "honey pot" less sexy than rather greasy? Clear. Apart from these little wormwood, there is a well-rounded, successful album that was recorded with great attention to detail. And then that's just good. "

- Oliver Marquardt : Juice.de

In contrast, Killian Peters said:

“Even though the craftsmanship here is carried out at the highest level, the whole thing looks very unimaginative at the back. (...) The other mistake of »Drama« is on the content level. Because the actually clever idea of stylizing the upright Schwabylon as the heart of German capital (...) and thus having the Bossaura in the cradle only works as long as Shindy stays in the familiar Bietigheim. Beyond the spaetzle equator, it denies all rappers who speak of social advancement their right to exist. Shindy's celebrated philistinism sabotages the basic idea of hip hop without even noticing it. "

- Killian Peters : Juice.de

Thomas Kiebl's album was torn up in the Austrian magazine Themessage.at. Not only were the radio play skits described as "simply embarrassing", Shindy's image is also being scratched by the fact that he is proven to have had some malpractice in the luxury items he describes. His attempts to describe sex in songs like Mmm and Honey Pot are described as "far below the aesthetic standards that Shindy claims for himself". The whole thing culminates in the conclusion:

“The label home is new, Bietigheim-Bissingen is the home base again, otherwise little has happened at Shindy. Aside from the embarrassing skits, the sex tracks are the biggest evil. With the rest, Shindy lacks the attitude to convey the conjured up decadent lifestyle really credibly. The washed-out sound image is also of no help to him. "Drama" offers a few good lines. Much longer than the playing time of the Shindy part on “Finale wir komm”, the album will not be remembered. That would be an impressive 11 seconds. Olé. "
