The Drassanes Reials de Barcelona ( Catalan for Royal Shipyards of Barcelona , Spanish : Atarazanas Reales de Barcelona ) were the most important shipbuilding facilities in Barcelona for several centuries . The building complex, whose origins go back to the late Middle Ages , is located in the El Raval district not far from the Old Port (cat .: Port Vell ) and is now home to the city's maritime museum.

history

The Drassanes were probably not the first shipyards in the city, an older shipyard is said to have been located on the Roman city wall at the Regomirtor. During the reign of Peter III. the construction of the Drassanes began between 1280 and 1300. They consisted of a walled rectangle with a tower at each corner. Two of these towers are still standing today. Alfonso IV gave the order to roof the shipyard. The work dragged on but due to lack of money and storms until the reign of Peter IV . A proposal by the king to relocate the shipyard was not implemented. The city council - the Consell de Cent - opposed it and instead proposed financial support to complete the canopy.

Under John I , the Drassanes were greatly expanded to meet the needs of the Catalan merchants and the Aragonese crown . The inner courtyard was roofed over and a two-story vestibule crowned with stepped battlements with a small courtyard was built. The Gothic building from 1381 has eight halls. During renovations, which were completed in early 2013, excavations came to light that provide relevant data on the history of the building. On the one hand, the remains of a Roman necropolis were found. On the other hand, it was found that although the building dates back to the thirteenth century, much of what has survived to this day is not medieval but dates from the sixteenth century, although the original Gothic style has been retained.

At the end of the 15th century there were already 16 halls. In 1571 the Real , the flagship of Don Juan de Austrias in the naval battle of Lepanto, was built here .

From 1578 the Generalitat de Catalunya took over the administration and built three new halls in 1618, the dimensions of which differed from the previous ones. Between 1641 and 1644 the Drassanes were fortified because of the reaper revolt . In the 18th century the central hall was enlarged to accommodate the new types of ships. 1714–1935 the Drassanes served as military barracks. On May 5, 1976, the Drassanes were listed as a historical monument.

Maritime Museum

Since January 18, 1941, the Drassanes have housed the Museu Marítim de Barcelona . The museum was realigned and reopened in 2014.
