The parish church of St. Trinity , locally mostly Trinity Church , called the center of the Palatine City Frankenthal is a Catholic church . Together with the nearby Ludwigskirche , St. Paul, St. Cyriakus, St. Jakobus, St. Georg and the Church of St. Cross in the district of Mörsch , it belongs to the parish of St. Trinity.

geography

The church is located in the northeast of the central town hall square, west of the Protestant Twelve Apostles Church and the medieval Erkenbert ruins . The Ludwigskirche, which is administratively connected to the Trinity Church, is 400 meters further north outside the historic city center, the Church of St. Cross in Mörsch, which was last connected to the parish community, is two kilometers away. With the pastoral reform that came into force in 2015, the parish community became the new parish of St. Trinity. There were also four new churches. St. Paul and St. Cyriakus (Eppstein / Flomersheim), as well as St. Jakobus and St. Georg (Studernheim). These six parishes form the new parish within Frankenthal.

Buildings and equipment

The Dreifaltigkeitskirche is a late baroque hall church . Since the interior with its frescoes from the first half of the 18th century could not be reconstructed after the bomb damage in 1943, the high altar and the two side altars were taken over from the baroque hospital church in Baden-Baden during the reconstruction .

history

The construction of the church in the town that was then part of the Electoral Palatinate was initiated as early as 1709 and then planned by the electoral engineer captain Williancourt . For the Catholic faithful, it was intended to replace the neighboring former collegiate church of St. Maria Magdalena , which was no longer available to Catholics after the expropriation following the Reformation and after being destroyed by fires and wars has only survived to this day as a so-called Erkenbert ruin.

Due to difficulties in financing, the construction of the new church dragged on over several decades. The church consecration with consecration of the three altars took place on September 28, 1732 by the Auxiliary Bishop Johann Anton Wallreuther of Worms , but the church was not finally completed until 1748. The Electors Carl Philipp and Carl Theodor supported the building and commissioned the Asam brothers from Rottweil to paint the interior . The bells were cast in a Frankenthal foundry.

The church was first renovated in 1882, 150 years after its consecration. Than during the Second World War in the bomb night of September 23, 1943 burned the Frankenthaler downtown, the Trinity church was almost completely destroyed. It was rebuilt under the parish priest Wilhelm Hilzensauer and re-consecrated on October 2, 1949 by the Speyer bishop and later Cardinal Joseph Wendel . When choosing materials for the reconstruction, mistakes were made, partly due to lack of money, partly to insufficient knowledge. During an exterior and interior renovation for the 250th anniversary celebration in 1982, initial attempts were made to remedy the situation.

In the spring of 2009, 300 years after the start of planning, a comprehensive, appropriate external renovation began. The costs were initially estimated at 900,000 euros, of which 400,000 should go to the affected parish and 500,000 to the diocese of Speyer . During the work, a dispute arose as to whether a decades-just before the north wall of the church grill station after the church renovation for reasons of fire safety, urban architecture receives another location. An interior renovation was also initiated later, which doubled the costs. The outside work was finished in November 2010, the inside work lasted until May 2011. The snack bar was moved back to its old location next to the church - until the usage contract expired soon - and it was also given a new coat of paint to match the church.

On May 29th, the reopening of the church was celebrated with a 500 meter long human chain, which Catholic and Protestant Christians formed together around the area with the Trinity Church, the Twelve Apostles Church and the remains of the Collegiate Church of St. Maria Magdalena. The renovation costs amounted to € 1.8 million. The diocese of Speyer took over 80 percent of this, the parish, the city of Frankenthal and many private donors paid for the rest.
