The three- spined fish ( Triacanthidae) are a family in the order of the puffer fish relatives (Tetraodontiformes).
features
They have a slightly elongated, laterally compressed body that is covered by small, rough scales. The mouth opening is small. As with their relatives, the triggerfish and filefish , the first ray of the first hard-nosed dorsal fin is formed into a strong spine. In addition, instead of the pelvic fins, they each have a spine, which is how they got their name. Their caudal fin is deeply forked and, unlike all other puffer-like fish, is the main driving organ. Three-spined are 15 to 28 centimeters tall, their color is silvery.
Fin formula : dorsal 1 V, dorsal 2 14–21, anal 13–22
Way of life
Little is known about the way of life of the three-spined species. You live in the Indo-Pacific . All but Triacanthus biaculeatus are deep sea fish that only occasionally come near the coast. Triacanthus biaculeatus lives from the Persian Gulf along the Asian coasts to Japan and on the coasts of South and East Australia in sea and brackish water .
