Drimia karooica is a plant of the genus Drimia in the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet karooica refers to the occurrence of the species in the Karoo .

description

Drimia karooica grows with group-forming, elongated spherical bulbs with a diameter of up to 4 centimeters. The exposed, green, succulent onion scales dry up gray at their tips. The up to six, green, ribbon-shaped, lanceolate leaves are spread out. Their bald and shiny leaf blades are up to 8 inches long and 2 inches wide. The tip of the leaf is pointed and has an attached tip.

The up to 30-flowered inflorescence reaches a length of up to 20 centimeters. The flower stem is erect, the bracts membrane-like. The flowers are on stalks up to 8 millimeters long . The bell-shaped flower shell is mauve. The stamens are fused at their base. The anthers are 1 millimeter long and the ovary ovoid.

Systematics and distribution

Drimia karooica is widespread in rock crevices in the South African province of Western Cape in the Little and Big Karoo .

The first description as Rhadamanthus karooicus by Anna Amelia Obermeyer was published in 1980. John Charles Manning and Peter Goldblatt put the species in the genus Drimia in 2000 .
