Drimia namibensis is a plant of the genus Drimia in the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet namibensis refers to the occurrence of the species in the Namib desert.
description
Drimia namibensis grows with egg-shaped-spherical bulbs with a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. The onion scales are fleshy. The leaf bases are banded transversely. Their stem-round roots are succulent . The two to six, clawed , linear-lanceolate leaves are ascending and appear after the flowers. Your longitudinally furrowed leaf blade is up to 24 inches long and 2.5 inches wide.
The upright inflorescence with many flowers in the upper part reaches a length of up to 70 centimeters. The bracts are spurred. The flowers are on stalks up to 8 millimeters long . The bell-shaped flower shell is pale mauve. The stamens are fused at their base and 1.5 millimeters long. The ovary is egg-shaped. The heyday is midsummer.
The egg-shaped fruits are up to 7 millimeters long. They contain elongated, flat, black seeds that are 5 millimeters long.
Systematics and distribution
Drimia namibensis is common in the Succulent Karoo in the south of Namibia .
The first description as Rhadamanthus namibensis by Anna Amelia Obermeyer was published in 1980. John Charles Manning and Peter Goldblatt put the species in the genus Drimia in 2000 .
