Third Synod of Carthage

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The third Synod of Carthage was a council held on August 28, 397 . The inclusion of scriptures in the biblical canon was discussed and their authenticity checked, and the Donatist dispute (314-320) was discussed.

The main source for the events of the Synod is the Codex Canonum Ecclesiae Africanae ("Canonical Code of the African Church"), a compilation of resolutions of the numerous councils held in Carthage in the fourth and fifth centuries, which has come down to us as part of the canon law collection of Dionysius Exiguus .

An important result of the synod is a listing of biblical scriptures. This was probably put together four years earlier at the Council of Hippo and confirmed in Carthage together with other previous resolutions. It was stipulated that only certain canonical texts may be read as divine scriptures in the church: The five books of Moses , the book of Joshua , the book of judges , the book of Ruth , the four books of kings (Kings and Samuel), the two books of the chronicles ( Paralipomenon ), Job , Book of Psalms , the five books of Solomon ( Book of Proverbs , Ecclesiastes , Song of Songs , Book of Wisdom and Jesus Sirach ), the twelve books of the prophets, Isaiah , Jeremiah , Ezekiel , Daniel , Book of Tobit , Book of Judith , Book of Esther , Ezra , Nehemiah , two books of Maccabees . In the New Testament the four Gospels , the Acts of the Apostles , thirteen Epistles of Paul , the Epistle to the Hebrews , two Epistles of Peter , three Epistles of John , the Epistle of James , the Epistle of Jude and the Revelation of John .
