Drongan Castle is the ruin of a low castle ( tower house ) next to Drongan Mains Farm in the former mining village of Drongan , which is about 13 km away from Ayr and from Cumnock in the Scottish administrative unit East Ayrshire .
history
The first written mention of the Drongan lands is found in documents from the 14th century: in the 1390s they were given to the Craufords , whose fortress Drongan Castle was 250 years. The property fell from the Craufords to the Cunninghames and then to the Earls of Stair . The Smith family bought the property around 1760 and had Drongan House built there, as well as an earthenware factory at Coalhall . She introduced new farming methods to her lands.
description
A description by J. Paterson from 1863 shows that only a 7 meter long and 1 meter high wall fragment of indefinable thickness remained of the presumed Tower House or Donjon . At that time it was covered with earth and grass, but you could see that it was made of rubble stones that were connected with mortar . The ruin stood on a 3 meter high, oval mound .
After a visit to the site by Ordnance Survey in June 1954, it was assumed that it came from the 15th century, but there was no indication of an exact year of construction.
When the Ordnance Survey visited again in October 1980, only a pile of rubble was found.
