Dryope (mother of Pan)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dryope ( Greek  Δρυόπη ) is a figure from Greek mythology .

In Homer , a daughter of the king is Dryops mentioned that Hermes the shepherd god Pan gives birth. Now there is already a Dryope in the Arcadian story , but who has Amphissus as her son.

Virgil, in turn, writes of Dryope as a lover of Faunus , who becomes the mother of the Rutulian Tarquitus .

Since the Italian Faunus was equated with the Greek Pan, the legend has presumably changed over time, as a result of which Dryope's role changed from the mother of a shepherd god to his lover.
