Jisr az-Zarqa ( Arabic جسر الزرقاء, DMG Ǧisr az-Zarqāʾ , Hebrew ג'סר א-זרקא, "Bridge on the blue river") is a town in the district of Haifa in Israel . The city is the only city on the Israeli Mediterranean coast with a purely Arab population .

General

In 2005, 11,100 inhabitants were registered, the number of inhabitants rose to 14,692 by 2018, the area of the city was 1.52 km². Jisr az-Zarqa is a local association and therefore does not have the legal status of a city. The cities of Zichron Ja'akow and Binjamina as well as the kibbutzim Beit Chanania and Ma'agan Micha'el are in the vicinity . The nearest Arab city is Furaidis . Directly south of Jisr az-Zarqa are the posh residential districts of Keisarija , separated by a heaped earth wall. From a Jewish point of view, this earth wall, up to 5 m high and over 1 km long, serves as noise protection against muezzin calls and shots of joy at parties, as well as an additional obstacle against burglars from Jisr az-Zarqa. From the Arab side, the wall is described as racist because Jisr az-Zarqa is completely encircled by the earth wall, the coast, the Taninim National Park and the Tel Aviv-Haifa expressway and thus has no natural development opportunity.

In 2008, a citizen of Jisr al-Zarqa, Mariam Amash, applied for a new ID card. The year she was born was 1888, making her the oldest living person in the world. However, the records and documents from Ottoman times are insufficient so that the year of her birth could not be confirmed.

geography

At Jisr az-Zarqa the Nachal Taninim flows into the Mediterranean. The Israel National Trail , which comes from Tel Aviv from the south near the coast or directly along the shore, leaves the coast here and continues over the Carmel towards the Jezreel plain .
