A duffle coat (actually: . English duffel coat ) or duffel coat is a three-quarter-length, single-breasted coat of heavy wool fabric with a hood and toggle locks of horn or wood . It is the only classic coat model that still has a hood.

Duffel is the name of the material from which the duffle coat is made. The name of the fabric is derived from the town of Duffel (south of Antwerp) in Flanders , Belgium , where it was made from the 17th century. According to the Oxford English Dictionary , the name first appeared in 1677 and described a coarse woolen fabric with a dense, fluffy pile or felt-like frieze .

The origin of the characteristic sporty cut is not clear. On the one hand it is traced back to the Polish rock popular in the first half of the 19th century , and on the other hand to the habit of the monks . The duffel coat is particularly popular in France and Great Britain .

Duffle coats have been made since the early 1890s, originally for sailors in the Royal Navy . Original Montgomery, the oldest duffel coat manufacturer, has been supplying all troops with this coat variation since the Second World War .

Montgomery coat

One of the most famous duffle coat wearers was the British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery during the Second World War, which is why the duffle coat is often referred to as "Monty coat" or "Monty" for short. In the fashion industry, a “Montgomery coat”, or simply Montgomery or “Monty”, is a particularly robust duffle coat as a weather coat. It has the classic shape with the functionality of a short coat. The “ stadium coat”, a trench coat-style coat, fulfills a similar function .

Duffle bag

The duffel bag or duffle bag is a large, cylindrical traveling bag , which in the manner of a Seesacks was sealed up with a string.

Originally the duffel bag was made from the same heavy Belgian wool as the duffle coat, today it is mainly made of canvas .

Later the term was also applied to large sports or travel bags that are carried horizontally on carrying straps, have a solid base and are closed with a zipper at the top.
