The Skaterhockeyclub Duisburg Ducks (SHC Duisburg Ducks) is an inline skaterhockey club from Duisburg with 180 members. The first men's team plays in the 1st inline skater hockey Bundesliga and is, with eight German championship titles, together with the Düsseldorf Rams , German record champions in skater hockey. Furthermore, two other men's teams, one women's team and four youth teams belong to the Duisburg Ducks. The SHC plays its home games in the south sports hall in Duisburg- Hüttenheim .

Club history

The Skaterhockey Club (SHC) Duisburg Ducks was founded on November 1, 1989 with the aim of building a team that can take part in the organized games of the German Rolling Sports Federation. Just two years later, the goal could be achieved and you took part in the game operations of the former league, where the club played in the following years. However, they played with varying success and the 20-man squad failed several times due to the experienced teams and thus missed promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga.

The founding of the youth department is seen as a new age. It was founded by the board in 1996 and after a short time 30 children were taking part in the department's training units. To this day, the association can look back on successful youth work, as the many national and international titles stand for. At the same time, the number of senior citizens also increased.

The year 1996 was also a successful one for the league team. At the end of the season the promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga and in the following season the direct march through to the 1st Bundesliga could be celebrated. Only one year after promotion, the club was able to celebrate its greatest success to date, the German runner-up in 1998. But this season was topped again by the Duisburg Ducks the following year. At the end of the season, the German championship moved to the Ruhr metropolis. The team won the European Champion's Cup in 1999 only shortly before.

The 2000 season is considered to be the most successful season in the club's history with only one lost competitive game, a preliminary round game of the European Cup. As the first title of the year, the Ducks brought the European Cup to Duisburg and only three months later the title defense of the German championship was made perfect. In the end, the Duisburg Ducks beat the Crash Eagles Kaarst in the cup final and achieved a premiere in German skater hockey with three titles. The Duisburg team were the first to win the "triple" in Germany.

In the years up to 2006, the German champion was always called Duisburg Ducks. In addition, the German Cup was won again in 2001 and 2003 and in 2005 the club from the south of Duisburg won the European Cup for the third time after a 7-3 victory in the final against the Copenhagen City Hustlers. In the same year, the German championship title was defended for the sixth time in a row with a 2-0 play-off win against HC Köln-West (9: 3 and 9: 7 after extra time). So the Ducks still lacked a German championship to be German record champions together with the Düsseldorf Rams (in 2013 both have 8 championship and 4 runner-up titles).

However, the successful streak of the Duisburg Ducks broke in 2006. In the European Cup they failed in the quarterfinals with 0: 5 against the team La Tour and coach Ulf Steeger's team was eliminated early in the German Cup. With 3: 4 they had to admit defeat to Kollnau , although the goal shot ratio was 86:34 for Duisburg. In the semifinals of the German championship, the end also followed. With second place after the preliminary round, the Duisburg Ducks met the Düsseldorf Rams in the play-off quarter-finals , who were beaten 9: 4 and 5: 4 in two games. In the semifinals, the team was eliminated against HC Köln-West , who won both games, 6: 9 and 5: 6. What was strange, however, was the abandonment of the first semi-final game on November 4, 2006: When the score was 6: 5 for Cologne, the game had to be abandoned in the 55th minute. The reason for this was a failure of the electronics as a result of a severe power failure, which caused chaos across Europe that evening. The game was repeated the next day.

In 2006 there were 180 active members in eight teams.

Teams

Some of the teams play very successfully in the highest German leagues and have also achieved international success.

1st men's team

The Duisburg Ducks' figureheads are the first men to be responsible for most of the titles. The greatest successes are the eight German championships, the six German and three European cup victories. The reasons for the success are that the team has played well for years, there have been few player changes, and almost all of the players are native Duisburg and have a high level of identification with the club. Some players from the squad have also gained experience in ice hockey , mostly at EV Duisburg or clubs from the region.

2nd men's team

The second team of the Duisburg Ducks plays in the Regionalliga Mitte. A total of 23 players belong to the team, which came fourth in the 2010 season as a sensational climber. Although it is a men's team, there are two women in the squad who are also active in the women's team.

3. Men's team

The third team of SHC Duisburg finished the 2008 season as bottom of the table. It plays in the Landesliga Niederrhein and has 27 players. Here, too, there are some women on the team.

Women's team

Like the first men's team, the women also play in the top German division, in the first division. 13 players belong to the team that is coached by Thomas Sell. The preliminary round of the 2006 season could be completed as 3rd and played in the semi-finals for the German championship. There they failed with 1: 2 to the Menden Mambas . The greatest success of the women's department so far is, besides the finals 2010-2013, the German championship 2011.

Junior team

The youth team with the oldest players is the junior team (born 1996–1998). In the current season there are 25 players in the squad. At the end of the season, the team was 1st in the Junior League West. In the past, the juniors were three times German champions (1999, 2000 and 2002), six times German runner-up (1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2012 and 2013), 1999 and 2013 European Cup winners and seven times German Cup winners (1998, 1999, 2001, 2002 , 2003, 2012 and 2013).

Youth team

Those born in 2000–2001 made up the youth team with 20 active players who played in the first youth league West A and in the 2007 season was able to achieve 1st place in the second youth league West A. The greatest successes of the youth team were winning the German championship and the German Cup in 2000 and 2001, as well as winning the European Champion's Cup in 2001.

student

The second youngest in the group are the pupils, they come from the years 2002–2003. The 21 players narrowly missed the play-offs in the student league A in the 2006 season, with one point missing in the end. The greatest successes for the pupils were the German runner-up and the German runner-up in 2004.

Bambini

The smallest members are the Bambini, they are born in 2000 or younger. The 17 players also missed the leap into the play-offs by finishing third, one point behind second in the Bambiniliga, the top division. In the years 2003 to 2005 the Bambini were runner-up, 2001 vice-cup winner and 2002 vice-European cup winner. The greatest success, however, is the German Cup victory in 2005.
