Originally planned mode

The 1st Bundesliga starts with ten teams. Each team meets every other team in the first and second leg. There are three points for a win in regular time. If a game ends in a draw after 60 minutes, a penalty shoot-out follows immediately. Two points are awarded for a win after a shootout and one point for a loss after a shootout. In the event of a tie at the end of the main round, the direct comparison decides on the ranking. The first eight teams reach the play-offs. The team in ninth place has qualified for the next season. The team in tenth place will be relegated directly to the 2nd Bundesliga. The winner of the play-offs is German champions.

  • Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic

On March 13, 2020, ISHD announced the provisional cessation of gaming operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This season break was initially limited to April 15, but was repeatedly extended, most recently on July 1, 2020, when the further suspension was decided until August 16, 2020.

In several video conferences with the clubs, the ISHD discussed the possibility of resuming the game. Should the situation with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic permit, the men's Bundesliga should be divided into two groups of five teams, in each of which a single round (i.e. a return match against each opponent) should be played. The first four in each group should reach the play-offs. A relegated team should not be determined in the 2020 season. The first matchday of the actual season that has already been played will be canceled; the season is restarted. In any case, the season should end on December 31, 2020. If this short version of a season is not possible due to legal regulations, the 2020 season will be completely canceled.
