The 1st Bundesliga starts with twelve teams. Each team meets every other team in the first and second leg. For the 2013 season, the table ranking was changed from the two-point system to the three-point system. There are three points for a win in regular time. If a game ends in a draw after 60 minutes, a penalty shoot-out follows immediately. Two points are awarded for a win after a shootout and one point for a loss after a shootout. In the event of a tie at the end of the main round, the direct comparison decides on the ranking. The first eight teams reach the play-offs. The teams in positions nine and ten have qualified for the next season. The teams in positions eleven and twelve will be relegated directly to the 2nd Bundesliga. The winner of the play-offs is German champions.
