The 1st Bundesliga starts with twelve teams. Each team meets every other team in the first and second leg. There are two points for a win and one point for a draw. In the event of a tie at the end of the main round, the direct comparison decides on the ranking. The first four teams reach the play-offs. The winner of the play-offs is German champions.
Since the Bundesliga was increased to 16 teams for the 2001 season and divided into a North and South relay (eight teams each), there were no direct relegations in the 2000 season. The teams in ranks five to ten have qualified for the next season. The teams in positions eleven and twelve contest a relegation against the two table thirds of the 2nd Bundesliga. The first two and the second two in the 2nd Bundesliga go straight to the 1st Bundesliga.
