The ships of MSC Danit -type among the Ultra Large Container Ship - container ships .

history

The series ordered in 2006 was delivered between 2009 and 2012 by the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering shipyard based in Geoje , South Korea . The client for part of the series is the Mediterranean Shipping Company from Geneva , another part was built for the Hamburg shipping company Claus Peter Offen . The CMA CGM Christophe Colomb , which was delivered to the shipping company CMA CGM at the end of 2009, also belongs to the same type of ship.

The MSC Clorinda in the port of Hamburg

A ship of the series, the MSC Alexandra , had a collision with the VLCC tanker Dream II on August 3, 2016 in the Singapore Strait , just under three kilometers from Sebarok Island . The MSC Alexandra got a large hole on the port side of the stern and lost some containers, some of which remained on the forecastle of the tanker.

The MSC Clorinda ran aground in the Suez Canal on January 4, 2017 and blocked traffic. The ship was later released again with the help of a tug.

In 2018, 9 ships are to be converted at Beihai Shipbuilding, and there is also an option to convert two more ships. The ships will be increased to a length of 394.4 meters and the container capacity will increase to 17,000 TEU.

technology

The ships of this type have a particularly large double hull and (as of 2010) are among the largest container ships in the world. They have remarkable innovations and details in terms of shipbuilding, especially in terms of environmental protection in the maritime industry . In contrast to the majority of conventional container ships, the deckhouse is arranged far forward, which enables an improved line of sight and thus higher forward deck loading. Among other things, the bunker tanks are arranged below the superstructure in order to meet the latest MARPOL regulations. The powerful drive system with the two-stroke diesel main engine type MAN B&W 12K98MC-C positioned as far aft as possible is also outstanding. The holds of the ships are closed with pontoon hatch covers. Some of the ships are 51.20 m wide, another part 48.40 m. Therefore, the maximum container capacity varies between 13,050 and 14,000  TEU , with an average container weight of fourteen tons, the capacity drops to around 10,640 TEU for the wider ships. There are also 1000 connections for integral refrigerated containers , of which up to 900 can continue to be operated during maneuvers.
