The Dunbar Islands are a group of small islands in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . They are located off the northeast coast of Livingston Island . Aspis Island ( 62 ° 28 ′ S , 60 ° 9 ′ W ) belongs to the group . Neighboring is the group of Zed Islands ( 62 ° 26 ′ S , 60 ° 10 ′ W )
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the island group in 1959 after Thomas J. Dunbar Jr. (1788-1860), captain of the schooner Free Gift from Stonington , Connecticut , who was part of the Fanning-Pendelton Sealing Expedition (1820-1821) for development new seal fishing grounds off the coast of the South Shetland Islands operated. The islands were most recently mapped between 2008 and 2009 by Bulgarian scientists, who also took the names of Balsha Island ( 62 ° 28 ′ S , 60 ° 12 ′ W ), Melyane Island ( 62 ° 29 ′ S , 60 ° 11 ′ W ), Pogledets Island ( 62 ° 28 ′ S , 60 ° 9 ′ W ) and Zavala Island ( 62 ° 28 ′ S , 60 ° 10 ′ W ).
