The Dunham River is a river in the Kimberley region in the northeast of the Australian state of Western Australia .

Sometimes the river is mistakenly called the Denham River .

geography

The river rises on the western slopes of the O'Donnell Range and flows northeast parallel to the Great Northern Highway . At Cabbage Tree Creek it crosses under the Great Northern Highway and later also the Victoria Highway west of Kununurra . A few hundred meters further , it flows into the Ord River .

Origin of name

The river was in 1882 by the explorer and pioneer of the Kimberleys Michael Durack after administration officials Reverend Father Dunham from Brisbane named in 1871 as the first pastor of the Cooper Creek in outback Queensland visited.

Floods

The Dunham River often overflows its banks when it rains heavily. In March 2000, the amount of water discharged on such an occasion was estimated at 2,700 m³ / s.
