Dunja Vejzovic (born October 20, 1943 in Zagreb ) is a former Yugoslav - Croatian opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ).

Life

The artist lived for a few years in Africa, where her father worked for the UN. In her hometown she studied both graphics (art academy) and singing (music academy) with Marija Borčić . She also attended master classes in Salzburg and Weimar. She deepened her vocal studies for a year at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts . Her stage career began in 1969 at the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb . Two years later she became a member of the ensemble at the Nuremberg Opera. There she immediately took over the major roles in her subject: Carmen in Carmen , Venus in Tannhäuser , Azucena in Il trovatore , Amneris in Aida , Dalila in Samson et Dalila , to name just a few of the many. In 1978 she went to the Frankfurt Opera and confirmed herself as a freelance artist a year later.

Her international career began in 1978 at the Bayreuth Festival , where she shone during three festival seasons in the role of Kundry in Parsifal . Herbert von Karajan was able to win Dunja Vejzovic for the Salzburg Festival in 1980, 1981 and 1984. There she sang Kundry in Parsifal and Ortrud in Lohengrin . The singer was awarded the Prix ​​Fanny Heldy for the record of Parsifal . Dunja Vejzovic has sung at all the famous opera stages in the world, in Rome, Milan, New York, Barcelona, ​​Paris, London a. a. m. She worked with the great conductors of the time, for example Herbert von Karajan, Carlos Kleiber , Christoph Eschenbach , Claudio Abbado , Lorin Maazel , Eugen Jochum and Zubin Mehta .

In addition to the opera singer Anja Silja, Dunja Vejzovic was a guest singer in the documentary film Die Macht der Demokratie (1983).

In parallel to her own opera and concert activities, Dunja Vejzovic works as a singing teacher. After professorships in Graz and Zagreb, she accepted a position at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart. Many of her students are now well-known personalities of the opera world such as E.g . : Christina Landshamer , Evelin Novak and Kresimir Strazanac . The artist holds master classes and is a member of the jury of several international singing competitions.

In 2004 she published a monograph (including CD) with documentation of her stage and concert appearances.

On October 20, 2010, she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for her work .
