The Dunkgraben in the Straubing-Bogen district , Lower Bavaria , is now divided into two parts. Its almost 6 km long upper course is a left tributary of the Kinsach , while its little over 3 km long lower course is a left tributary of the Alte Kinsach . The Dunkgraben used to be a left tributary of the Danube .

The stream takes its name from the wasteland of Dunk on the upper reaches.

Separation of the lower course from the upper course

With the construction of the Kinsach-Menach down conductor across the route of the Dunkgraben, the upper course was diverted into the newly created bed of the Kinsach , where its water now flows eastwards initially. The lower course, which is now separated from the upper course and begins a few steps south of the downcomer, has lost large parts of its catchment area and its runoff.

Upper course

The Dunkgraben rises near Wollersdorf at about 397  m above sea level. NHN and flows on its first almost three kilometers in a long, gentle curve to the left west of the contiguous forest area Ödenhoferholz . From this, a total of six noticeable streams with at least rudimentary valley formation reach it, of which the highest source is just over 400  m above sea level. NHN and the longest is just over a kilometer long. On this arch he passes the elevated eponymous place Dunk on his right. From there it runs parallel to the left of the SR 22 district road in its not very wide meadow. At the Wernberg north of Hoerabach it enters the Danube plain, turns left from the foot of the wooded slope and bends west for about 400 meters. Then it swings south and reaches the Hoeramoos after around 800 meters . From there it now moves the last 1.6 kilometers east-southeast to its confluence from the left into the Kinsach west of the village of Muckenwinkling . There are mostly trees on the banks of the upper reaches of the Dunkgraben.

It begins its almost six kilometer long path in the area of the market town of Mitterfels, is then for a total of almost one kilometer above and below Dunk border to the municipality of Steinach, whose district Agendorf it then passes through. In Hoeramoos it then changes to the Oberaltaich district of the city of Bogen , into which it flows. this part of the Dunkgraben drains 4.3 km², of which about half are forested. It runs consistently, but especially until it enters the Danube plain, very close to the right watershed, beyond which the Kinsach, which is already much deeper in the upper reaches, usually runs parallel less than a kilometer away.

Tributaries

  • About 610 meters down from the source, a forest stream from the Ödenhoferholz flows from the left and south , with a length of 0.57 kilometers and a catchment area of 0.22 km². It bears the water code number (GEWKZ) 158546.
  • Another 1.7 kilometers down, near the bend of the SR 22, a forest stream, also coming from the Ödenhoferholz and flowing south of Kindlasberg , flows from the left and east with the GEWKZ 158546. This has a length of 1.09 km and a catchment area of 0 , 39 km²
  • 700 meters before the confluence with the Kinsach there is the one kilometer (1.09 km) long creek with the GEWKZ 158546 and a catchment area of 0.72 km², touching Hoerabach in the west.

Lower course

The origin of this remaining course is a few meters south of the confluence of the upper course in the Kinsach-Menach-Ableiter , below the dike-Anwandweg. In the north-south section up to State Road 2125, the ditch roughly follows the original course; since the parcels and watercourses have been straightened here, it has lost its old loops and shrub growth. The trench often runs dry here. To the south of the state road, the course is more natural, it still runs in a natural hollow of the terrain that extends strongly to the left and east and has the character of a stagnant body of water with a gallery in sections. Today it no longer flows southwards into the Danube as it used to be, but is piped 200 meters in front of the Danube at the Donaudeich 200 meters at the foot of the Danube towards the west in the direction of the Alte Kinsach , where it runs into the grinder of the Alte Kinsach pumping station . In some maps, piping through the dike in the direction of the Danube is incorrectly entered or a run to the Alte Kinsach that is open today; however, the old section on the other side of the Danube dike has been preserved.

The lower reaches only have tributaries from ditches, with the exception of a very short floodplain ditch that runs out of this damp hollow at the east arch near a small pond in the area of a valley floor widening.
