Through Desert and Jungle is a two-part Polish adventure film by director Władysław Ślesicki from 1973 and as such the first film adaptation of the novel Through Desert and Wilderness by Henryk Sienkiewicz . A remake with the title Through Desert and Wilderness was made in 2001 under the direction of the South African director Gavin Hood .

Part 1

Africa at the time of the Mahdi uprising : Nel Rawlinson, the nine-year-old daughter of a British engineer who is helping to build the Suez Canal in Egypt , is kidnapped by rebels with the young Pole Stanisław Tarkowski and taken into the desert to take the Mahdi hostage to serve. At the end of the first part they manage to escape.

Part 2

Nel and Stanislaw set off with the local couple Kali and Mea on the arduous way back through the desert, which is made difficult by sandstorms, heavy rain, slave traders and their pursuers. On the way, they also meet natives and nurse an elephant to health. Shortly before they die of thirst, the children are found by a search party led by Nels father.

Through desert and jungle was filmed in Egypt , Sudan and Bulgaria and was shown in GDR cinemas from summer 1975 and in April 1977 under the title Through desert and wilderness on ZDF .

In 1974 the film material, with partly expanded content and scenes not included in the theatrical version, became a 4-part television series with the same title.

The elephant shown in the film is actually an Indian elephant , although it is pointed out in the film that as an African elephant it is more difficult to train for work than the Indian one.
