Through the Wild West is an Eastern European film adaptation of the novel Gabriel Conroy by Bret Harte , which was released in GDR cinemas on June 15, 1979, shortened to 98 minutes .

Gabriel Conroy is one of the many on the road during the early California gold rush in the last third of the 19th century. He is confronted with sudden wealth from oil discoveries, disappointment with his partner, who blackmailed and cheated on him, and the misfortune of the loss of his wife, who is murdered. He decides to resume his life as an adventurer and prospector.
