Donatas Banionis

Donatas Banionis (born April 28, 1924 in Kaunas , † September 4, 2014 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian or Soviet actor. He was one of the most famous actors in the Soviet Union .

Life

Banionis began his career as an actor after attending a ceramic school at the Drama Theater in Panevėžys , before he also took part in films in 1959. His portrayal of the character of the farmer Vaitkus in Nobody wanted to die (1965) ( Niekas nenorėjo mirti , Russian: Никто не хотел умирать ) by Vytautas Žalakevičius won him the Acting Award of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival . Banionis soon became a sought-after actor, so that larger and more elaborate national and international projects followed, for example a role in Mikhail Kalatosov's Soviet-Italian co-production The Red Tent (1969).

In the leading role of Francisco de Goya in Konrad Wolf's literary film adaptation Goya - or the arge path of knowledge , for which Banionis was awarded the GDR National Prize, as Beethoven in Horst Seemann 's Beethoven - Tage aus einer Leben (1976) and as Mauris in Wolfs Mama, ich lebe (1977) he was also active in the GDR for DEFA .

One of his best-known roles is the psychologist Kris Kelvin in the science fiction film Solaris (1972) directed by Andrei Tarkowski .

Banionis received numerous awards in Lithuania and the Soviet Union and in 1974 became a member of the Supreme Soviet .

KGB activity

Donatas Banionis was a KGB agent (pseudonym "Bronius"). He was recruited by the Soviet secret service in Soviet Lithuania in October 1970 . Banionis established contacts with its compatriots abroad and shared information about Lithuanians in America, USA, etc.

family

Banionis was married. On April 2, 1948, he married the actress Ona Konkulevičiūtė (1924-2008). They had the sons Egidijus (1948-1993) and Raimundas Banionis (* 1957), who is also an actor. Donatas Banionis had four grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.
