action

The aged Baran is released from prison after 35 years. He used to be a bandit in the mountains of Cudi and was known as a marksman. When he returns to his village, he finds that it is under the water of a reservoir. Only one confused old woman still lives there. She reveals to him that Baran was betrayed by his best friend Berfo at the time. So he could ask for the hand of the childhood sweetheart Barans Keje. Baran learns that the two have gone to Istanbul and is on his way there for the first time in his life.

On the way he gets to know the little crook Cumali and helps him out of a dangerous situation. Cumali feels a bond with the old man, who seems helpless and a little crazy to him, and finds him a room in a shabby hotel where he also lives. After a few days of unsuccessful search, Baran sees the man he is looking for on television: he has changed his name and has become one of the richest men in Istanbul. He is also sick and has to rely on a wheelchair. Baran goes to his house and is actually admitted.

The former boyfriend tells him his view of the story: he kidnapped Keje, betrayed his boyfriend, and the many sins he committed for her are proof of his love. The only problem is that Keje has not spoken a word to anyone in the 35 years since he bought her with Baran's money from her parents. He asks Baran to go to Keje, and in fact she speaks to him and explains that she has waited for him for 35 years. He promises to get her soon and leaves the house.

Meanwhile Cumali gets into big trouble. The woman he loves wants 200 million liras from him to get her brother out of prison. Cumali gets the money by working for a mean drug boss and embezzling the money. When the "brother" is released, however, he turns out to be a lover of Cumali's girlfriend. Cumali places them in a hotel room. Although Baran tries to stop him, he shoots them both.

To make matters worse, Cumali is now being held by the drug lord and threatened with death. Baran, who actually finished the crime, vouches for him and promises to get the money. He receives a check from Keje's husband; but Keje will stay with him and not go away with Baran. Baran and Keje say goodbye to each other. The drug lord gets the check and Cumali is released. Because he is wanted for the murder of his girlfriend, he wants to go to the mountains with Baran.

Suddenly Cumali is shot in the street by the drug lord's thugs: the check was not cashed. Baran finds Cumali on the roof of the hotel and is with him when he dies. Baran angrily resumes his old way of life as a bandit and avenges Cumali. He takes his weapon, looks for Keje's husband and shoots him. Then he kills the drug lord and all of his men.

For a while Baran managed to hide on the roofs of the city; eventually he is caught by the police and there is a nightly shooting. The film takes a mystical turn in the final scenes: Baran loses an amulet that had protected him from bullets; in the light of a random fireworks display, he walks towards the police officers. Riddled with bullets, but unstoppable, he runs to the edge of the roof and, after a short pause, leaps down; when jumping, its shape dissolves into nothing. At the same time, a shooting star appears, because, as was previously learned, all dead bandits turn into stars. Keje sees the shooting star and tells Baran that they will meet again soon.

criticism

  • Tobias Lehmann wrote: “Generally a nice gangster film, of course nothing new in terms of plot, but the exoticism of Turkey and a great, exotic leading actor as an aging bandit bring new elements with them. Unfortunately the film is too long, at some point the plot no longer pulls against the rhythm. The back and forth between arrests and liberations dragged on a bit until the final showdown. "
