The EM-motive GmbH is a subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH . The company was founded in 2011 as a joint venture of Daimler AG and Robert Bosch GmbH. The company develops and manufactures electric drive motors for electric and hybrid vehicles as well as off-highway applications.
The aim of the cooperation between Daimler and Bosch was to bundle competencies in EM-motive and to drive new projects using maximum synergies in order to accelerate and optimize the development of high-quality electric machines for vehicle drives.
history
The joint venture between Daimler and Bosch was founded in November 2011. The EM in the name is an abbreviation for electromobility . Originally only drive motors for electric vehicles were to be built, but just one year after the company was founded, production was expanded to include hybrid motors and off-highway applications.
Both companies contributed their engineering knowledge to the development and production of the electric motors. As an automotive supplier, Bosch has expertise in the development and production of electric motors; Daimler had experience in the field of electric mobility with fuel cells and batteries. Initially, only the company's own products such as Mercedes-Benz and Smart (from Daimler) as well as Porsche and PSA Peugeot Citroën (as customers of Bosch) were equipped with the engines. Since 2012, however, the EM-motive motors can also be found in other hybrid and electric vehicles.
In January 2019, Daimler announced that it had achieved its goal at EM-motive to produce electric motors economically. Therefore, Daimler is selling the stake to the co-owner Bosch, which becomes the sole owner. Bosch stated that EM-motive would try to win additional customers. Daimler stated that in the future it would also buy electric motors from competitors on the world market.
Locations
The company's headquarters and production site is in Hildesheim . The EM-motive development area is located at a second location in Schwieberdingen near Stuttgart .
Products
EM-motive products offer solutions for all variants of hybrid drives and also for purely electric driving. The integrated motor generators (IMG) are integrated in the drive train in the transmission. The separate motor generators (SMG) are designed for use as electric axle drives. All electric motors can be used both as a drive and as a generator to recover energy. The product applications of the electric drive unit range from car hybrid drive motors to applications as a generator, plug-in hybrid drive in front and rear-wheel drive configurations to purely electric vehicles in which the electric motor functions as the sole drive.
In 2015, a motor from the company was used in a test drive of the Google Driverless Car . The company manufactured an 80 kW electric motor for the driverless car.
