Eagle Rock (Los Angeles)

Eagle Rock is a district in the northeast of the US metropolis of Los Angeles .

The name of the district derives from a rock formation in the north that casts a shadow reminiscent of a flying eagle . In Spanish times the rock was called Piedra Gorda (Thick Rock), the association with the bird probably only came about with English- speaking settlers. However, an alleged Tongva legend is told that an eagle kidnapped a child and turned it into the rock.

Eagle Rock lies between the towns of Glendale to the north and west of the neighborhood and Pasadena to the east. It is bordered by the boroughs of Glassell Park , Mount Washington, and Highland Park to the south and southwest .

The district is located in a valley of the San Rafael Hills and is isolated by this from the rest of the urban area of ​​Los Angeles. By Eagle Rock Raymond extends a portion of the warp ( Raymond Fault ).

In the Spanish colonial times, today's Eagle Rock was initially part of the land of the Mission San Gabriel, established in 1771 . In 1784, the Spanish Governor of Alta California Pedro Fages Corporal Jose Maria Verdugo transferred land that became known as Rancho San Raphael. The donation was confirmed again in 1798. Verdugo died on April 12, 1831, leaving the land to his children Julio and Catalina Verdugo.

During the Mexican-American War , preliminary negotiations between Americans and Mexicans took place on January 11, 1847 in what is now Eagle Rock under an oak tree. Two days later was in Campo de Cahuenga in the wake of the Treaty of Cahuenga , signed with the war on the Western Front ended.

In 1851, the Verdugo family was granted ownership of the ranch by the United States Board of Land Commissioners . In 1879 and 1886 the lands were divided and sold. In 1884 the first school opened in Eagle Rock and in 1887 a railway connection was created, which was dismantled again in 1889. Telephone connections existed from 1904 and again a railway connection from 1906. In 1910 the Los Angeles Gas and Electric Co. built gas pipelines.

On August 8, 1910, at the instigation of Randolph Hearst, the first meeting of the Boy Scouts of America of Southern California was held at Eagle Rock .

On March 1, 1911, Eagle Rock was raised to town after a vote among the approximately 600 residents. The post office was opened in 1912. In 1913, construction began on the Occidental College campus at Eagle Rock. In 1921 the town hall and the fire station were built. The town hall was inaugurated the following year. On March 27, 1923, the citizens of Eagle Rock voted to be incorporated into Los Angeles.

California State Route 2 runs to the west of Eagle Rock and California State Route 134 ( Ventura Freeway ) to the north . The section of the Ventura Freeway that runs from Pasadena to Glendale through Eagle Rock has been named President Barack H. Obama Highway since December 2018 . The section was named after Barack Obama , who studied at Eagle Rock at Occidental College from 1979 to 1981.
