The East Region (or East) is one of the five regions of the city-state of Singapore . It had 686,050 inhabitants in 2019 (resident residents only). The region has the second highest population density of the five regions and the smallest land area. Bedok is the most populous neighborhood in the region and Tampines is the regional center of the region. Six planning areas as well as Changi Airport and Paya Lebar Airbase are located on an area of ​​93 km² .

The region is also home to the Changi Naval Base and Changi Prison , which was first built by the British in 1936 and is Singapore's oldest detention center. It was a prisoner of war camp during the Japanese occupation of Singapore in World War II .

Changi is also a major aerospace and trade zone in Singapore. Airlines such as Singapore Airlines , SilkAir , Singapore Airlines Cargo , Jetstar Asia Airways , Scoot , Valuair and Tigerair have their headquarters here. Changi Business Park in Changi South is also home to several commercial offices such as DBS Bank and Standard Chartered . IBM also established a technology park with a $ 90 million investment along Tampines Industrial Avenue.

Additionally; On November 30, 2006, IKEA opened its second store in Tampines Retail Park , and extends over three floors along with the adjacent Courts and Giant, which opened in December 2006 and February 2007. These three stores are the first to have retail stores in Singapore. Free shuttle buses run from Bedok, Tampines, Sengkang and Pasir Ris stations. The public bus connection is provided by bus connections 27, 34, 58, 68, 118 and 168.

The residents of the region have access to various educational institutions, ranging from preschools to elementary and secondary schools, as these are located in the various cities of the East Region. The region is also home to various colleges such as ITE College East, Singapore University of Technology and Design, and Temasek Polytechnic . There are also 6 international schools, Global Indian International School (GIIS), East Coast Campus, NPS International School, Sekolah Indonesia Singapura, Overseas Family School and United World College for Southeast Asia (Tampines Campus), as well as a special school, the Katong School (APSN).

The eastern region is currently connected by the East West Line and the Downtown Line . The future Thomson-East Coast Line is under construction.
