The Ebenezer Chapel in Wuppertal is a monument protected church . It is the church of the Evangelical Free Church Community in Wuppertal-Barmen .

Surname

The church is named after the biblical stone of help ( 1 Sam 7,12  EU ) (cf. Eben-Ezer Church ). Since 1998 it has also been called “Köbner's Church” in memory of Julius Köbner , who founded the Baptist congregation in Barmen in 1852 .

Architecture and building history

The chapel at Wartburgstrasse 44 was built in 1855/1856 in neo-Gothic style from sandstone , with a risalit-like accented portal . It was inaugurated between September 27 and 29, 1856. During the Second World War it was destroyed in 1943 and rebuilt by the municipality in 1953.

meaning

It is the mother church of the Rhenish Baptist congregations and thus an important historical and cultural testimony to the city of Wuppertal. The church building was therefore placed under monument protection on August 27, 1984.
