Eberhard Friedberger (also: Friedeberger or von Friedberg ) (* probably in Friedberg ; † winter 1458 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a master builder, stonemason and engineer in Frankfurt am Main. He played a key role in the expansion of the Frankfurt city fortifications as well as in other public buildings in the city.

life and work

Little is known about Friedberger's biography. Eberhard Friedberger , registered in the Frankfurt civil register in 1398, is possibly his father, possibly also identical with him. In 1403 a master Eberhard who was involved in the construction of the All Saints' Gate and the fortification of the Friedberger Tor is mentioned in a document.

In 1434 he is mentioned in the civil register as the nuwe Meister Steinhauer as the successor to the late master craftsman Leonhard Murer von Schopfheim . The service letter of 1435 was renewed in 1447.

In 1436/37 Friedberger built the archive tower of the Frauenrode house . He then worked in Mainz , Würzburg and from 1445 to 1447 in Friedberg in the renovation of the Liebfrauenkirche there.

In 1447 he returned to Frankfurt and ran a construction hut for stone masonry there. The council entrusted him with the renovation of the old Nikolaikirche , where he mainly worked on the tower and the cornice, and created a model for the new construction of the dilapidated tower, which, however, was only carried out after his death.

In 1449 he built the Zwinger in front of the Eschenheimer Tor and drafted plans for the conversion of the Goldstein farm . Between 1450 and 1452 he built the roundabout on the wooden warehouse on the Sachsenhausen bank of the Main. 1454-1458, he made several towers and gatehouses at Frankfurt Main river, including the butcher Gate , Holy Ghost gate , wooden gate , the Rententurm and Fahrtor .
