The first work on stages followed in 1968. Schweigert was assistant at the theater "Am Gärtnerplatz" in Munich and in 1969 artistic assistant at domestic and foreign theaters. From December 1969 to April 1970 he worked at the Chur City Theater. 1970 to 1975 he studied painting, stage design and film at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf with Professors Gerhard Richter , Wolf Jürgen Seesselberg and Ole John. Schweigert completed his studies in 1975 as a master class with Professor Gerhard Richter.

From 1974 to 1975 Schweigert temporarily headed the stage design class at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf and was a founding member of Joseph Beuys' Free University for Creativity and Interdisciplinary Research . In the following years until his death, Schweigert worked as an art teacher at various schools and taught at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences from 1982 and later also at the newly founded youth art school in Langenfeld.

Since 1972, Schweigert has presented his oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and gouaches in more than 20 solo exhibitions at home and abroad. “It is not the surface of nature that is interesting for him, but the area between external and internal impulses. Schweigert sees an astonishing similarity, for example, between a single-cell organism and the strange shape of a drying tar road. " This is what the Ruhr-Nachrichten Schwerte wrote on December 2, 1983 when the exhibition opened.

Schweigert had been with the actress Ingeborg Margret born on October 30, 1970. Helsper (1934–2008) married. He died unexpectedly after a short illness in 2004 in Düsseldorf.
