Eberhard Wassermann
Eberhard Friedrich Wassermann (born July 8, 1937 in Frankfurt am Main ; † January 31, 2020 ) was a German physicist and science journalist.
Life
Wassermann studied physics from 1957 at the University of Göttingen with a diploma in 1963 and a doctorate under Rudolf Hilsch in 1965. As a post-doctoral student he was at Northwestern University and from 1967 research assistant at RWTH Aachen under Wilhelm Sander, where he completed his habilitation in 1970 and became a C3 professor for experimental physics. From 1976 until his retirement in 2002 he was professor for low temperature physics at the University of Duisburg-Essen . He is mainly concerned with magnetic materials and magnetism and was chairman of the specialist association for magnetism of the DPG from 2000 to 2006 and chairman of the working group for magnetism of the DPG from 2000 to 2008.
He has been visiting scholar at McGill University , the University of California, San Diego , Orsay University and the Center for Condensed Matter and Low Temperatures (CRTBT) in Grenoble, was a Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in 1987 and from 1988 to 2002 several visiting scholars at the universities of Hokkaido and Osaka.
Act
In the field of magnetism, he dealt with the relationship between the structure and magnetism of three-dimensional alloys, magnetic shape memory of alloys, magnetic nanoparticles, martensitic phase transitions and nanostructured uniaxial magnetic data storage devices.
With Axel Carl, he has been organizing the Science Festival Highlights of Physics from the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology in cooperation with the German Physical Society since 2001 . It was brought into being based on the events in the year of physics 2000 and took place annually in a different city (with free admission).
In 2007 he and Axel Carl were awarded the medal for scientific journalism of the German Physical Society (DPG). The golden badge of honor of the DPG followed in 2010.
