Eberhard von Monheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eberhard von Monheim (* around 1275; † after 1346) was Master of the Order of the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order from May 1328 to June 1340 ( Landmeister of Livonia of the Teutonic Order ).

Life

Eberhard von Monheim was 1313/1314 Komtur von Ventspils (German Windau ) and from 1314 to 1328 Komtur von Kuldīga ( Goldingen ). On May 25, 1328 he was elected landmaster of the order.

Shortly after taking office, there were riots against him in Riga . On June 23, 1328 the Latvians burned down the place Daugavgrīva ( Dünamünde ), where an important fortress of the order to secure the exit of the Daugava ( Düna ) into the Baltic Sea was located since 1305 . The Lithuanians joined the rebellious Latvians, who undertook a campaign to Paistu in September 1329 . After pushing back the Lithuanians, Eberhard besieged Riga in September of the same year. A severe famine broke out in the city. On March 17, 1330, Riga surrendered to the master of the order. At his command, the Riga city walls were partially removed and the construction of a religious fortress, later the Riga Castle , began outside the city limits .

In 1340 Eberhard von Monheim undertook another campaign against the Lithuanians, which, however, failed because of the harsh winter. On June 24, 1340 he resigned from his office. His successor was Burchard von Dreileben , who ruled the order from 1340 to 1345. Eberhard left Livonia and was Komtur of the Kommende St. Katharina in Cologne or the Kommende Mechelen until 1346 , both of which belonged to the Koblenz Chamber Ballei .
