history

The place Ebersweier is mentioned for the first time in 1215 as Eberswilre, after the local nobleman Kuno von Ebriswilre. It has not been conclusively clarified whether a found Roman coin can be considered evidence of a former Roman settlement. At least the name “Städeläcker” also refers to the Romans .

The oldest landlord was the Honau monastery , which ceded the court, which was probably created from Rodland, to the Allerheiligen monastery . Under Emperor Friedrich III. Ebersweier came to the imperial bailiwick of Ortenau and the district court of Griesheim at the beginning of the 14th century and was in front of Austria . Durbach came under the rule of Staufenberg. In 1806 the Ortenau and thus also Ebersweier fell to the Grand Duchy of Baden.

The church is closely connected with local history. In 1280 the Ebersweier pastoration was in the hands of the Franciscans of Offenburg, who received tithes for it. In 1365 the pastoral care was transferred to the Lords of All Saints. After the Reformation, the Capuchins of Oberkirch took over pastoral care. The old church was dedicated to the martyrs Tiburtius of Rome and Valerianus .

In 1666 the abbot of All Saints was the lender and tithe. In 1371 a priest appeared for the first time. Three pastors from Ebersweier were elected abbots of All Saints' Day. The Thirty Years' War also left its mark on Ebersweier. The village and church were burned out and its population decimated considerably.

In 1703 the parsonage was burned down by the French during the War of the Spanish Succession , so that only the stone cellar with a Gothic vault remained. The half-timbered building was only rebuilt in 1712.

The Second World War also claimed its victims. Of the 142 war participants from the community, 32 fell or went missing. In the final months of the war in 1945, various buildings were destroyed in a bomb attack and 13 people were killed.

In the course of the community reform on January 1, 1973 it was incorporated into the community of Durbach .

Today Ebersweier has an area of 455 ha. The village has 1250 inhabitants. It is shaped by fruit growing. Parish branches are documented in the Leimenhag district in 1549. Even today, what is noted in Kolb's historical encyclopedia from 1813 is still valid: "The place has a not very large, but fruitful ban, good schnapps and fruit." 50 distilleries are registered in the place. The burner Ludwig Hettig was awarded the title "Best Burner in Baden" by the Badischer Kleinbrennerverband in 2016.
