The Moos is a mountain range in the Central Black Forest . The highest elevations are the 876.9  m above sea level. NHN high Siedigkopf and 871.3  m above sea level. NHN high Mooskopf , actually Geißschleifkopf . The Moos is the local mountain of Gengenbach and Oppenau .

The Moos separates the Renchtal from the Kinzig valley in an east-west direction . At the same time, the former free Reichstal Harmersbach and the Nordrachtal arise in a north-south direction .

Due to the formerly thick and dark forest, the Moos is the scene of numerous legends and legendary figures. The main character that recurs over and over again is the Moospfaff , a former monk of the All Saints Monastery , who is said to have lost the host on the way to a Last Unction and is now bypassing and misleading people until he has found the host again.

The fictional character Simplicius Simplicissimus by Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen , to whom a memorial commemorates, lives in the novel The adventurous Simplicissimus during the Thirty Years' War on the Moos for several years:

“I lived on a high mountain called Moos, a piece of the Black Forest that is overgrown with a dark fir forest everywhere; from it I had a beautiful appearance towards the ascent into the Oppenau valley and its side prongs; towards noon in the Kinziger valley and the county of Geroldseck, where the same high castle between its neighboring mountains has the reputation of the king in a game of skittles; towards decline I could overlook Upper and Lower Alsace, and around midnight the Lower Margraviate of Baden down to the Rheinstrom, in which area the city of Strasbourg with its high cathedral tower protruded like the heart in the middle of a body "

- Grimmelshausen : The adventurous Simplicissimus Teutsch

The Moosturm , an observation tower that was built in 1890 and is maintained by the Black Forest Association, stands on the Mooskopf .

The hiking trails Kandelhöhenweg , Querweg Gengenbach – Schapbach – Alpirsbach and Renchtalsteig meet at the Geißschleifsattel between Mooskopf and Siedigkopf . The Naturfreunde Gengenbach eV maintain a managed hut (Naturfreundehaus Kornebene) with overnight accommodations on the Korn plain (640 m above sea level). The highest inn (Gasthaus Moosbach) in the entire district of Ortenau and the entire Moosberg is located in the municipality of Nordrach at 589 meters above sea level.

The hurricane Lothar , on 26 December 1999 the moss and Siedigkopf severe damage. Before that, the peaks were densely forested with tall spruce and fir trees, so that from the observation tower there was hardly any distant view over the tree tops. After the storm completely destroyed the tree population, a much more colorful and species-rich forest is growing instead of the previous monoculture. On the Siedigkopf there is a memorial that is supposed to commemorate the hurricane.
