Ferocactus macrodiscus is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet macrodiscus means 'large disc'. A Spanish common name is "Viznaga Caballona".
description
Ferocactus macrodiscus grows individually with disc-shaped, light green or yellowish green shoots that are clearly sunk into the ground. The shoots have a tap root and reach heights of up to 10 centimeters with diameters of 30 to 40 centimeters. There are 13 to 35 sharp-edged ribs that are humped and notched. Below the widely spaced areoles they are flattened and thickened. The thorns emerging from the areoles are red or yellow. The four crossed central spines are slightly flattened and up to 3.5 centimeters long. The six to eight backward curved radial spines are 2 to 3 centimeters long. The majority of them are round.
The bell-shaped flowers are slightly purple-pink. The bracts are edged white. The flowers reach a length of 3 to 4 centimeters and have the same diameter. The up to 4 centimeters long, magenta-colored fruits are irregularly spherical.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Ferocactus macrodiscus is found in the highlands of the Mexican states of San Luis Potosí , Querétaro , Guanajuato , Puebla and Oaxaca .
It was first described as Echinocactus macrodiscus in 1832 by Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Ferocactus in 1922 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
