Gwilym Lloyd George of Dwyfor, 1st Viscount Tenby (* 4. December 1894 in Criccieth , Wales ; † 14. February 1967 ) was a British politician of the Liberal Party .

biography

After visiting the Eastbourne College studied Lloyd George, the second son of the last Liberal Prime Minister David Lloyd George , at Jesus College of the University of Cambridge . He then did his military service in the British Army and was finally promoted to major .

Lloyd George began his political career in 1922 when he was first elected as a candidate for the Liberal Party to the House of Commons , where he represented the constituency of Pembrokeshire until 1924 . In 1929 he was re-elected to the House of Commons as a representative of the Pembrokeshire constituency and was a member of this until 1950.

In 1931 he was Parliamentary State Secretary in the Board of Trade for the first time for a short time ; he held this office again from 1939 to 1941. He was then Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Food between 1941 and 1942. He was then appointed to the cabinet for the first time by Prime Minister Winston Churchill as Minister for Petrol and Fuels and was a member of this until 1945.

Lloyd George was re-elected to the House of Commons as a Liberal Conservative in 1951 and represented the constituency of Newcastle upon Tyne North until 1957 . In 1951 he was reappointed to the cabinet by Prime Minister Churchill as Minister of Food. After a reshuffle, he was in 1954, not only Minister of the Interior ( Home Secretary ) , but also Minister of Wales in the Cabinet Churchill. He also held these functions in the government of Churchill's successor, Anthony Eden, until 1957.

After retiring from the House, he was in 1957 with the title Viscount Tenby , of Bulford in the County of Pembroke , in the hereditary nobility raised. He was a member of the House of Lords until his death . After his death, his eldest son David became the heir to the title.

His younger sister, Lady Megan Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, was also a longtime MP for the Liberal Party and the Labor Party .
