Echinocereus cinerascens is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet cinerascens means 'becoming ashen gray, fading'.

description

Echinocereus cinerascens has many shoots and mostly forms cushions of prostrate to upright shoots . The bright green, cylindrical shoots are up to 30 centimeters long and 1.5 to 12 centimeters in diameter. There are five to twelve ribs , most of which have well-developed humps, but are occasionally almost undone. The one to six protruding to spreading, sometimes crossed central spines are somewhat pink or orange and turn brown or even white. They have a length of up to 4.5 centimeters. The six to ten circular, yellowish to whitish radial spines are 1 to 3.5 centimeters long.

The broad, funnel-shaped flowers are a little pink-magenta and have a white or very light throat. They appear well below the shoot tips, are 7 to 10 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 6 to 12 centimeters. The green and thorny fruits smell and taste like strawberries.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus cinerascens is distributed in Mexico in the Federal District and in the states of México , Hidalgo , Tamaulipas , Querétaro , Guanajuato , Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí .

The first description as Cereus cinerascens by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle was published in 1828. Charles Lemaire placed the species in the genus Echinocereus in 1858 . The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Echinocereus cinerascens subsp. cinerascens
  • Echinocereus cinerascens subsp. septentrionalis (NPTaylor) NPTaylor
  • Echinocereus cinerascens subsp. tulensis (Bravo) NPTaylor

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
