Echinocereus pulchellus is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet pulchellus is derived from the diminutive of the Latin word pulcher and means 'pretty'.

description

Echinocereus pulchellus usually grows singly, shrinks during the dry season, and then retreats into the ground. The blue-green spherical shoots are 2 to 13 inches long and have the same diameter. Their roots are thickened. There are nine to 17 widely spaced ribs that are slightly humped. The three to fourteen spines are not clearly differentiated into central and radial spines. They are mostly radiating, yellowish to whitish and become darker with age. The thorns have a length of 0.1 to 1 centimeter.

The broad, funnel-shaped flowers are pink to magenta or white. They appear on the sides of the shoots, are 3 to 6 inches long and reach a diameter of up to 8 inches. The small, spherical fruits are almost dry when ripe and contain only a few seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus pulchellus is distributed in the Mexican states of Oaxaca , Hidalgo , Querétaro , San Luis Potosí , Zacatecas and Nuevo León on grassy places at altitudes of 1,800 to 2,400 meters. In the very large distribution area there are only a few populations in narrowly limited habitats.

The first description as Echinocactus pulchellus by Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius was published in 1832. Francisco Seitz placed the species in the genus Echinocereus in 1870 . A nomenclature synonym is Cereus pulchellus (Mart.) Pfeiff. (1837). The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Echinocereus pulchellus subsp. pulchellus
  • Echinocereus pulchellus subsp. acanthosetus (S.Arias & U.Guzmán) W.Blum
  • Echinocereus pulchellus subsp. sharpii (NPTaylor) NPTaylor
  • Echinocereus pulchellus subsp. weinbergii (Weing.) NPTaylor

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
