Echinocereus scheeri is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet scheeri honors the German trader and plant lover Frederick Scheer .

description

Echinocereus scheeri usually grows with numerous shoots sprouting from their base and sometimes forms upright, but mostly spread out or creeping groups. The cylindrical shoots are tapered towards their tips. They are 10 to 70 centimeters long and 1.5 to 4 centimeters in diameter. There are four to ten clearly blunt ribs , straight and occasionally tubercular on their sides. The up to four white to brownish central spines , which can also be missing, have lengths of 0.1 to 2 centimeters. The usually 6 to 13 white to light brown radial spines are 1 to 7 millimeters long.

The tubular-funnel-shaped flowers are pink to orange to scarlet. They appear along the sides of the shoots from sharply tipped buds, are 6 to 12 inches long and reach 4 to 6 inches in diameter. The short egg-shaped fruits are bright green and contain white pulp . They tear open lengthways and are covered with slightly sloping thorns.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus scheeri is common in the Mexican states of Sonora , Sinaloa , Chihuahua and Durango .

The first description as Cereus Scheeri by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck was published in 1850. Frederick Scheer placed the species in the genus Echinocereus in 1856 . The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Echinocereus scheeri subsp. Scheeri
  • Echinocereus scheeri subsp. gentryi (Clover) NPTaylor

A synonym for the subspecies Echinocereus scheeri subsp. Scheeri is Echinocereus salm-dyckianus Scheer (1856).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
