Echinocereus subinermis is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet subinermis is derived from the Latin words sub- for 'almost' or 'more or less' and inermis for 'unreinforced' and refers to the short thorns of the species.

Echinocereus subinermis grows individually or as branches and often forms groups that consist of up to 10 shoots . The gray-green to reddish, depressed spherical to cylindrical shoots are 4 to 33 centimeters long and have a diameter of 4 to 15 centimeters. There are five to eleven sharp ribs that are humped or have straight edges. The up to four mostly protruding central spines , which can also be missing, are light or dark in color. They have lengths of 0.1 to 2 centimeters. The up to ten slender, light yellow to gray radial spines are 0.1 to 3 centimeters long. The radial spines can also be completely absent.

The funnel-shaped and fragrant flowers are bright yellow. They appear near the shoot tips, are 7 to 10 centimeters long and reach 5 to 13 centimeters in diameter. The gray-green obovate fruits are thorny and contain white pulp . They tear open lengthways.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus subinermis is found in the Mexican states of Sonora , Sinaloa , Chihuahua and Durango in the western Sierra Madre Occidental .

The first description by Frederick Scheer was published in 1856. The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Echinocereus subinermis subsp. subinermis
  • Echinocereus subinermis subsp. ochoterenae (JGOrtega) NPTaylor

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
