description

Echinopsis backebergii grows individually or in groups. The spherical to short cylindrical, light green shoots reach a diameter of 4 to 5 centimeters. There are about 15 sharp ribs that are notched and spirally arranged. The areoles on it are initially hairy and 1 to 1.5 centimeters apart. From them arise from one to eleven thorns , which cannot always be differentiated into central and radial spines. They are initially brown and gray with age. The slender thorns are curved, almost hooked at the tip and 0.5 to 5 centimeters long.

The light to dark red flowers often have a bluish tinge and a white throat. They appear laterally near the apex of the shoots and open during the day. The flowers are up to 5.5 centimeters long and 4 centimeters in diameter. Your flower tube is slender. The small, spherical fruits are semi-dry and tear open vertically.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinopsis backebergii is distributed in the Bolivian departments of La Paz and Cochabamba and the Peruvian regions of Ayacucho , Cusco and Huancavelica in the Puna vegetation at altitudes of 3200 to 3900 meters.

The first description by Erich Werdermann was published in 1931. Echinopsis backebergii is evidently closely related to Echinopsis hertrichiana .
