Echinopsis chalaensis is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet chalaensis refers to the occurrence of the species near Chala in the Peruvian region of Arequipa .

description

Echinopsis chalaensis grows as a shrub with several upright branches and reaches heights of up to 4 meters. The cylindrical shoots have a diameter of up to 15 centimeters. There are eight broad ribs that are furrowed across the areoles. The areoles on it are in the notches. Dark brown thorns arise from them , which become lighter with age. The two to three central spines are up to 5 inches long. The six to ten radial spines have a length of up to 1 centimeter.

The funnel-shaped, white flowers open at night. They are up to 17 centimeters long and have a diameter of 10 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis chalaensis is common in the Peruvian region of Arequipa on coastal hills, where it often hangs from rocks.

The first description by Werner Rauh and Curt Backeberg was published in 1957. Heimo Friedrich and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in 1974 in the genus Echinopsis .

Echinopsis chalaensis is more closely related to Echinopsis glauca .
