Echinopsis glauca is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet glauca comes from Latin and means 'blue-green' or 'gray-blue'.

description

Echinopsis glauca grows shrubby , branching from the base and forms open groups 1 to 2 meters in height. The cylindrical, glaucous gray-green shoots reach a diameter of 5 to 8 centimeters. There are seven to nine ribs that are notched. The gray areoles on them are 1 to 2 centimeters apart. Straight, stiff and brownish thorns spring from them and turn gray with age. The three to six spread, awl central spines are 2 to 8 inches long. The seven to ten needle-like radial spines have a length of 0.8 to 1.5 centimeters.

The long funnel-shaped, white flowers open at night and stay open until the next day. They are 13 to 19 inches long. The green fruits are up to 4 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinopsis glauca is distributed in the Peruvian region of Arequipa and in the south of the neighboring Chilean region Arica on dry coastal hills at altitudes of 500 to 2900 meters.

The first description as Trichocereus glaucus by Friedrich Ritter was published in 1962. Heimo Friedrich and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in 1974 in the genus Echinopsis .

Included in the species as a synonym were Trichocereus glaucus f. pendens F.Ritter (1962), Trichocereus glaucus var. pendens (F.Ritter) Backeb. (1966) and Echinopsis glauca f. pendens (F.Ritter) H.Friedrich & GDRowley (1974).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
