Echinopsis coquimbana is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet coquimbana refers to the occurrence of the species near the Chilean city of Coquimbo . A Spanish common name is "Quisco".

Echinopsis coquimbana grows shrubby , branching from the base, is sometimes prostrate, but usually upright and forms dense thickets . The cylindrical shoots have a diameter of 8 centimeters and are up to 1 meter high. There are twelve to thirteen  ribs . The large, circular areoles on them are yellowish to brownish. Straight, strong and brownish thorns arise from them and turn gray with age. The three to four central spines are more gray and up to 5 inches long. The eight to twelve radial spines have a length of 1 to 2 centimeters.

The bell-shaped, white flowers usually appear near the shoot tips or to the side. They are open day and night and are up to 12 centimeters long. The spherical, green fruits are edible.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinopsis coquimbana is common in the Chilean region of Coquimbo in the area around the city of La Serena .

The first description as Cactus coquimbanus by Juan Ignacio Molina was published in 1782. Heimo Friedrich and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in 1974 in the genus Echinopsis .

Further nomenclature synonyms are Cereus coquimbanus (Molina) K.Schum. (1897) and Trichocereus coquimbanus (Molina) Britton Rose (1920). In addition, Trichocereus serenanus F.Ritter (1965) included as a synonym in the way.

The original description of Cactus coquimbanus is very inadequate. It could be a species of the genus Eulychnia . However, a species from the family of Echinopsis deserticola or Echinopsis chiloensis is also possible .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
