Subspecies

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Echinopsis huotii subsp. huotii
  • Echinopsis huotii subsp. vallegrandensis (Cárdenas) G. Navarro

Echinopsis huotii subsp. huotii
The subspecies is distributed in the Bolivian departments of Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Chuquisaca and Tarija on stony slopes at altitudes of 1900 to 2700 meters. The shoots are cylindrical and there are four central spines.

The following taxa were as synonymous included in the subspecies: Echinopsis apiculata Left (1858), Echinopsis pamparuizii Cárdenas (1970), Echinopsis huotii var. Longispina F.Ritter (1980. nom inval.. ICBN and articles 34.1, 36.1) Echinopsis semidenudata Cardenas ex W. Haage (1981, nom. invalid ICBN -Article 36.1, 37.1).

Echinopsis huotii subsp. vallegrandensis
The first description as Echinopsis vallegrandensis by Martín Cárdenas was published in 1959. Gonzalo Navarro introduced the species as a subspecies to Echinopsis huotii in 1996 . Echinopsis huotii subsp. vallegrandensis is distributed in the Bolivian departments of Chuquisaca and Santa Cruz at altitudes of 2600 to 2800 meters. The shoots are rather spherical and rarely reach heights of more than 9 centimeters. There is a single central spine.

A synonym is Echinopsis vellegradensis hort. (no year, nom. invalid ICBN -Article 61.1).
