Puerto Busch is a settlement in the Santa Cruz Department in the lowlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Puerto Busch is a settlement in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Puerto Suárez in the province of Germán Busch . The station is located in the southeastern corner of the country at a height of 80  m on the right, western bank of the Río Paraguay , directly in the border triangle Bolivia / Brazil / Paraguay .

Military post and export port

The government of President Germán Busch Becerra succeeded in 1937 in the peace treaty with Paraguay after the Chaco War to secure at least sovereign access to the Atlantic via the Paraguay River for Bolivia. For a long time, however, no investments were made, so that Puerto Busch was only a military post. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the plans have been regularly revived, for example to facilitate foreign trade in agricultural and mineral raw materials . However, they were not implemented for a long time because the Evo Morales government initially set other priorities. A smaller part of the port infrastructure was only completed and put into operation in 2018. Since the judgment of the International Court of Justice on October 1, 2018, which did not grant Bolivia's request to oblige Chile to negotiate sovereign access to the sea, voices have been raised again to perceive the port as an alternative and to make appropriate investments.

geography

Puerto Busch is located in the Bolivian part of Pantanal , one of the largest inland - wetlands of the earth.

The mean average temperature of the region is around 26 ° C (see climate diagram Puerto Suárez) and fluctuates only slightly between 22 and 23 ° C in June and July and 28-29 ° C from October to February. The annual precipitation is just over 1000 mm, with a short dry season in June and August with monthly precipitation below 30 mm, and a humidity period from November to March with over 100 mm monthly precipitation.

Transport network

Puerto Busch is located at a distance of 805 kilometers by road southeast of Santa Cruz , the capital of the department.

Puerto Busch is the southeastern terminus of the 1,657 kilometer long Ruta 4 highway , which crosses the entire country in a west-east direction. The road starts in Tambo Quemado on the Chilean border and leads via Cochabamba , Santa Cruz to the border town of Puerto Suárez ; the last 140 kilometers past the iron ore deposits of Mutún along the Brazilian border are unpaved and lead through the Otuquis National Park .

A regional development strategy envisages connecting the future iron processing industry of Mutún with the South American Transcontinental Railway , which is expected to lead via Puerto Suárez and Puerto Busch , via Transpantenal trunk roads.
