Echinopsis schoenii is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet schoenii honors the German E. Schön, who lives in Arequipa andsupported Werner Rauh during his travels in Peru.

description

Echinopsis schoenii has a shrubby growth, is irregularly branched from the base and reaches heights of 3 to 4 meters. The cylindrical, gray-green shoots reach a diameter of 10 to 15 centimeters. There are seven broad ribs that are notched. The areoles on them are yellowish gray and are 1 to 2 centimeters apart. The thorns emerging from them are initially brownish, later turn gray and have a brown tip. The one or two strong central spines are protruding or directed downwards and up to 7 centimeters long. The six to eight radial spines are very unequal. The top of them are up to 1.5 centimeters long, the lower ones are up to 5 centimeters long.

The funnel-shaped, white flowers open at night. They are up to six inches long. Your flower tube is covered with blackish brown hair .

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis schoenii is distributed in the Peruvian region of Arequipa in the Andes at altitudes of 3500 to 3900 meters.

The first description as Trichocereus schoenii by Werner Rauh and Curt Backeberg was published in 1958. Heimo Friedrich and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in 1974 in the genus Echinopsis .
